Challengers emerge in Miami-Dade House races

Miami-Dade incumbent House members Jose Javier Rodriguez and Barbara Watson drew challengers this week as they prepare to seek re-election in 2014. Coral Gables Republican Daniel Diaz Leyva opened a campaign account Wednesday to run against Rodriguez, D-Miami, in District 112. Also Wednesday, North Miami Beach Democrat Dominique Simon opened an account to challenge Watson, D-Miami Gardens, in District 107.

Two other Democrats, Philip Brutus - a former House member – and Michael Joseph, also have filed paperwork for the District 107 race. Meanwhile, the race for an open House seat in South Florida has become more crowded. Hollywood Democrat Benjamin Sorensen opened a campaign account in District 100, which will be vacated next year by the term-limited Rep. Joe Gibbons, D-Hallandale Beach. Others who have opened accounts for the race are Democrats John Paul Alvarez, Joseph Geller and Alex Lewy.
